The right light does more than brighten a room. Its shape, proportions and position help define how the space feels, both when it is switched on and in daylight. Tempo Interiors approaches decorative lighting as part of the wider interior design and decoration scheme.
Whether you are considering a sculptural floor lamp, a pair of bedside lamps or a pendant as part of a room refresh, begin with how you use the space and the furnishings around it.
Give each light a purpose
A room may need comfortable background light, a focused reading light and a softer atmosphere in the evening. One fitting does not have to do every job. Think about the places where you sit, read, work or gather, and where the existing arrangement leaves you wanting more light or less glare.
Table and floor lamps can introduce another layer without making the ceiling the centre of attention. Keep available sockets, cable routes and everyday movement through the room in mind when considering placement.
Ideas, materials & details

Proportion comes before the finish
A light should relate to the furniture and architecture around it. A bedside lamp needs to suit the height and width of the table as well as its appearance. A pendant needs to be considered against the table or area below it, the ceiling height and the surrounding sightlines.
Use room photographs and dimensions to assess scale before settling on a style. Check the actual dimensions and supplier specifications rather than relying on a product photograph.
Connect materials and colours
Lighting can echo another finish in the room or introduce a deliberate contrast. Consider the base, shade and visible hardware alongside furniture, fabrics and artwork. A fitting may look very different when illuminated, so its glow and the way the shade filters light matter as much as its outline.
Discuss the light source, colour appearance and any dimming preferences with the supplier. Compatibility and performance need to be checked for the actual fitting, lamp and controls, rather than assumed from its style.
Keep design and technical work clear
Our focus here is decorative selection and coordination within your interior. Electrical installation, wiring, technical lighting design and compliance are separate responsibilities for the appropriate qualified professionals. Confirm feasibility and installation requirements before committing to a fixed fitting or changing its location.
Lighting questions
Can I start with one lamp rather than a whole room?
Yes. Bring photographs of the room and the furniture around the proposed position. Even a single selection benefits from considering the wider space.
What should I bring to a consultation?
Room photographs, any available plans, ceiling and furniture dimensions, inspiration images and your budget range are helpful. Describe what does not work with the lighting you have now.
Does Tempo provide electrical installation?
This service page concerns decorative lighting selections. Electrical work and technical requirements must be discussed with the appropriate qualified professional; they are not included by implication in a design consultation.
